South African expat rugby winger DTH (Daniel Tailliferre Hauman) van der Merwe scored two tries for Canada on Friday, ensuring that Canada has now booked its place at the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan.

Scoring two out of the team’s three tries, van der Merwe’s effort took Canada to a 27-10 victory over Hong Kong in their final Repechage qualifier in Marseille, according to Reuters.

Van der Merwe (32) not only booked Canada a spot at the World Cup… but the team will join South Africa in Pool B at the tournament, alongside Italy, Namibia and defending champions New Zealand.

Ironically it was a fellow South African, former Western Province player Matthew Rosslee (31), who landed one of the penalties for Hong Kong to reduce their deficit slightly. (Rosslee currently plays for Hong Kong and captains Valley RFC.)

Van der Merwe was born in Worcester in SA and took up rugby at a kid, even playing for the Boland U-16 squad before his family emigrated to Canada when he was 17.

Canada’s rugby captain Phil Mack said the team was “over the moon” with the results.
