In a report out today, it’s claimed that South Africa was voted ‘Best Country in the World’ at a World Countries Award (WCA) ceremony last night (Saturday, January 2).
But no sooner had South Africans taken to Twitter to celebrate their country’s winning, than they realised that France, Colombia, Bhutan, Oman and other countries were celebrating too.
Well known South African writer Gus Silber replied to one celebratory tweet saying: “Not true, alas. This is a notorious fake news site. Don’t believe everything you read on the Net.”
Gus added “These fake news sites give journalism a bad name. (All right then, a worse name.)”
If those posting on Twitter read past the headline they would have realised the whole article was tongue-in-cheek, but like all good citizens of a country, people were just so proud on reading the title that they didn’t really bother with the rest…and proudly shared it.
The fake report said that South Africans/Colombians/FillInTheNation could be proud of their country for being voted Best Country in the World and Nicest people on the planet (as well as most beautiful, humble and many more accolades) in the most prestigious international award.
It then went on to say: “It turns out that due to a tiny logistical concern, only votes from the South African judges [have] been counted” and that there was a “massive fight broke out between South African teammates as they could not agree on who was to pick up the award for Friendliest, Kindest and Most Civilised people on Earth.”
The good news is that although in a recent non-fake report, Conde Naste Traveller readers voted Italy, not South Africa, as their favourite country in the world…they did give South Africa the highest marks for scenery!
