It’s all happening underwater in Stellenbosch this week as South Africa plays host to the Underwater Hockey World Champs. The round robin action kicks off this morning, with the SA teams looking good after achieving individual team wins against Argentina, Australia, Canada and France during the warm-up games earlier this week.
The event, which began on Monday, and sees 16 countries battling it out underwater, will culminate with the finals on 2 April 2016.
Roger Bester, who plays for SA Masters and coaches the SA Ladies Elite, told SAPeople: “Months of preparation have led to this point, and the excitement and tension are now palpable.”
Team SA has two elite teams (ladies and men’s) as well as two master teams entered.
So far the South African teams are progressing well with wins versus Argentina (master men and elite ladies), France (master ladies), as well as Australia and Canada (elite ladies).
“Elite ladies will be hoping to improve on their third place finish from the last Champs (held in Hungary),” says Roger, “whilst the Masters ladies will be looking for gold medals after finishing second in Hungary.”
