Snake catcher extraordinaire, Jason Arnold, captured this wonderful footage yesterday as he caught a venomous puff adder, near Verulum in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
When he was called out to the property to remove the snake, Jason had no idea he would find a puff adder… particularly such a large specimen. She’s about 70cm long and “fairly nice and fat”… and in the video she puffs and hisses at Jason, proving just why the puff adder got its name and reputation.
Jason, from Universal Reptiles, remains a true professional throughout – cool, calm and collected… and chatting affably to the snake! “Whoops, come on girl!”
He wrote on social media: “Hi everyone. Caught the beaut in my video in the very rural area of Ndwedwe this afternoon. And straight from there to Waterloo to catch the 5th Black Mamba from the same house within 8 days !!! What an exciting ending to the day ?”
Watch to the end to see a bush snake’s reaction and the “complainants”, watching safely from a distance!

Jason has devoted himself to the snakes and the community, available 24/7… but it’s taken its toll, and he and his wife and 2-year-old daughter have had to move out of their home… as they couldn’t afford the rent any longer. His brother says: “Jason has had a passion for reptiles since he was a young boy, he also has a gift for working with these animals, a job that not many people would want to do due to the dangers & exhausting hours associated with it. He works tirelessly to assist with the safe removal of reptiles from residential & businesses areas which is beneficial to both the reptiles that he saves, & the people living & working in these areas.”
