South Africa’s Blitzboks sevens side got their World Series off to a winning start in Dubai on Friday, ending the day unbeaten… writes Mark Etheridge.
They beat continental counterparts Uganda 19-10 in their opening Pool A game.
Later in the day, Seabelo Senatla scored a hat-trick to guide the Blitzboks to a resounding 48-5 win over Kenya at the Dubai Sevens.
SA Rugby magazine reports that Jeffery Oluoch put Kenya in front with an early try, but two handling errors were expertly pounced on by the Blitzboks for the lead.
With Kenya on the attack, a loose pass was scooped up by Senatla, who cantered away. Less than a minute later, the Blitzboks’ magic man was in again, this time using his lethal step to leave the defenders in his wake.
Cecil Africa added the finishing touches to the first half with a third try as the Blitzboks took a 17-5 lead.
The second half was a rout, as the Blitzboks outscored Kenya five tries to none.
Senatla completed his hat-trick soon after the restart. Kenya’s defence then fell apart as the Blitzboks turned on the style with Branco du Preez, Justin Geduld, Kwagga Smith and Rosko Specman running in further tries.
One aspect that will be of concern for coach Neil Powell, is Du Preez’s goal-kicking. He only managed to convert four of their eight tries.
