A social media post highlighting the kindness of a police constable in Cape Town has caught the attention of his bosses at headquarters (HQ) who congratulated him on Twitter yesterday evening.
The unnamed constable’s photo and story has been shared on Facebook (FB) over 7,000 times and attracted over 26,000 likes since it was uploaded by Port Elizabeth resident Ethan Cairncross on Sunday 13 September 2015.
In a message to the Herald Port Elizabeth newspaper’s FB page, Ethan wrote: “I’d like to share this image…of a SAPS constable, gracefully and respectfully speaking to this lady in Cape Town. She moved to Cape Town 15 years ago with one wish – to have a better life; but over the years her family, including her kids, died…and now she’s living on the streets of Cape Town. This police constable found it in his heart to share peace love and kindness [with] this woman; he found the time to buy her food and things she needed. #Constablemiracle.”
Last night SAPS tweeted: “#sapsHQ We congratulate this Cape Town constable who shared time & food with a homeless lady #CaringCop #Serving SD.”
One of the many comments on Ethan’s post comes from Buntu Jina who wrote “Two things are obvious here – 1.The constable’s heart is [in] a good place 2. Being a police officer [is] not just a job, it’s a calling; we need more like him.” His comment has so far received over 2,000 likes.
SAPeople columnist Pip Davis said South Africa has “love” and that she wishes “we focused on more of what we as a nation get right instead of what we get wrong. There are far far more of us that get it right, that live with kindness as priority, than those that choose otherwise. The wolf we feed is the one that flourishes. I choose to feed the positive wolf. How about you?”
