South Africans around the country – and as far away as Canada – have been baking up a storm today on National Melk Tert Dag (Milk Tart Day)… the day South Africans are united in their love for this scrumptious national treasure.
One school in Pretoria – Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool – baked 600 milk tarts! While another school in KwaZulu-Natal used the opportunity to show some sweet gratitude for the heroes in their community.
The learners at Arboretum Primary School, in Richards Bay, surprised organisations in the area with delicious milktart which was homemade by Maria du Toit.
“On the 27th of February every year, South Africans celebrate a traditional dessert loved and enjoyed by many – The Milk Tart or Melktert,” said Arboretum Primary.
“Arrie [the school mascot] went out today to say thank you to some of our Heroes in town with a delicious Milk Tart.”
Arrie presented the local heroes with milk tart and a well-deserved certificate.
The recipients this year included: Dr Jurgen Otto at the Arboretum Veterinary Clinic; a diving unit; NSRI: Station Commander Bernard Minnie, newspaper journalists and hospital emergency staff.
