David Patient
South African Aids activist David Patient died last week at the age of 56. Diagnosed as far back as 1983, Patient was an icon in the age of HIV stigma and an activist for LGBTQI rights. For 34 years he showed that it was possible to live ‘positively’ with HIV. Carte Blanche reflects on his remarkable will to survive and victory over the idea that his diagnosis was a death sentence. (Producer: Kate Barry Presenter: Derek Watts)
Prison or Sanctuary?
South Africa has one of the lowest percentages of female prisoners in the world, with many of them having committed petty crimes, being released after a few years. But in Oudtshoorn, some women prefer a life behind bars to freedom. (Producer: Mart-Marie Faure, Presenter: Derek Watts)
Gauteng Health
Recently furniture and office equipment were seized from the Gauteng Health Department to settle a medical negligence claim. This may seem like a particularly low point for the department, but it follows years of mismanagement and maladministration in the province. Meanwhile, more medical negligence claims are piling up for which the department cannot legally budget. CarteBlanche asks: is Gauteng health facing an imminent financial crisis?(Producer: Anna-Maria van Niekerk and Marzanne van den Berg Presenter: Claire Mawisa)
The End of the Road for REDISA
On Friday, the Minister of Environmental Affairs Edna Molewa, formally revoked the REDISA tyre recycling plan which was meant to recycle our old tyres and stimulate the economy. Following the story since 2012, we now bring you the latest chapter in this ongoing saga. (Producer: Joy Summers, Presenter: Devi Sankaree Govender)
