Here’s this week’s Carte Blanche line-up, available for South Africans living abroad from today Tuesday – 05 June 2018 – if you’re a Showmax subscriber. In this week’s special extended broadcast, these are the stories you’ll see:
Medical Innovations from Stellenbosch
Cutting-edge research at the University of Stellenbosch has lead to the development of a bio-sensor that can reveal the early onset of cancer or cardiovascular disease developing unnoticed in your body. Claire Mawisa meets the phenomenal researcher – Professor Resia Pretorius – whose special interest in blood and red blood cells has revealed several remarkable patents.
The series of innovative medical breakthroughs includes a bio sensor for the early detection of cancer and remarkable new treatments for Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and Type 2 Diabetes.
The sensor can diagnose cancer in minutes, using a single drop of blood! Carte Blanche explores this cutting edge research. (Producer: Eugene Botha, Presenter: Claire Mawisa)
Up next: A @Stellenbosch_Uni professor has revealed several high-impact patents, including a nano bio-sensor for the early detection of cancer, as well as a remarkable treatment for #Alzheimers, #Parkinsons and Type-2 #Diabetes. @clairemawisa finds out more on #CarteBlanche pic.twitter.com/uzvjztQWXm

Gupta Assets
The National Prosecuting Authority was dealt a heavy blow in its State capture case against the Guptas, when the Free State High Court set aside the R250-million preservation order. The court found that there were shortcomings in the NPA’s case and no reasonable prospects of success in the prosecution. (Producer: Kate Barry, Presenter: Devi Sankaree Govender, Researchers: Tony Beamish and Laura Byrne)
Ogies Standoff
Structural damage, untimely blasting and black dust – coal mining is encroaching ever closer to homes in Ogies in Mpumalanga and pleas for intervention seem to be falling on deaf ears. In a desperate attempt to put an end to the coal mine blasting, fed-up residents with damaged homes and poor health, take on major mining companies. Carte Blanche returns to Ogies to investigate how the lives of those affected have deteriorated rapidly. (Producer: Anna-Maria van Niekerk and Marzanne van den Berg, Presenter: Macfarlane Moleli)
Making Peace in Angola
Decades after the devastating Angolan border war, nearly 100 veterans of the South African defence force undertake an emotional journey to battle sites that still haunt them, to extend a hand of reconciliation and friendship to former enemies. Defying expectations, Angolan citizens greet them with open arms. (Producer: Efpe Senekal, Presenter: Derek Watts)
Hook to Cook – an app changing W. Cape fishermen’s lives
A series of smartphone apps are disrupting traditional supply chain systems and changing the lives of artisanal fishermen. By enabling them to sell fish to restaurants without the middleman, these apps are putting money directly into the pockets of subsistence fishermen. (Producer: Liz Fish, Presenter: Claire Mawisa)
How is a mobile app changing the lives of some artisanal fishermen in the Western Cape? @clairemawisa finds out more about this industry-changing app. @abalobi_app #CarteBlanche https://t.co/nwy3Hl2PBr
