Naomi Daglish-Gage from Woodstock Care Home in Norfolk posted a message on Sunday night to a brilliant Facebook group called Postcards of Kindness.
She said: “If anyone is travelling to South Africa we would love a card for a couple of our residents who spent most of their lives out there.” This is the address (please remember to add UK at the end!):
It wasn’t long before another care home said “we’d love some too”. Their address is:
The Hyde Care Home, Walditch, Bridport, Dorset, DT6 4LB, UK
And here are another couple of homes that would love postcards from anywhere in the world:
- Sydney House, Brumstead Road, Stalham, Norfolk Nr12 9BJ, UK
- Avocet Court Care Home, Monmouth Close, Ipswich, Suffolk, IP2 8RS, England
“Of course we’ll send some back,” they say.
The UK-based Postcards of Kindness Appeal aims to combat loneliness and isolation in the country… which is something elderly South African expats, far from the friends they grew up with, would particularly feel. A postcard can connect them to home, their childhood and all the memories that brings.
It’s hoped with the #PostcardsOfKindness campaign that it reminds residents that “there’s always somebody thinking of them – regardless of where in the world the postcards have come from”.
The postcards stir residents’ memories and pique their imagination, they say.
If there are any care homes or facilities in South Africa reading this who would love expats around the world, or even around the country, to send them postcards – let us know and we’ll add them to this page (admin@sapeople.com).
