Deputy Sports Minister Nocawe Mafu also announced that R15 million is to be given to Cricket South Africa (CSA) over the next three years towards a professional women’s cricket league.
The DA noted afterwards:
«This funding will go a long way in supporting the team and motivating young and upcoming women in cricket. The women’s team showed that with the necessary support women in sport can perform alongside the best in the world. We urge the department to provide more funding across the board for women’s teams.»
CSA conveyed its gratitude to the Sports Department, with CEO Pholetsi Moseki saying:
“Our gratitude goes out to the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture for its support throughout the years and for celebrating our heroines. This financial injection demonstrates the department’s commitment to the development of cricket and will aid CSA’s continuous efforts to professionalise women’s cricket in the country.
“The support by the department shows that the development of women’s cricket relies on all of us: it is our collective responsibility to commit resources that will assist us in taking the women’s game forward. »
Moseki added:
“The Momentum Proteas have united the country in the most significant way, and the significance of them reaching the final of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 will ring in the corridors of history for many years to come. We hope the incentive awarded by the department to the Momentum Proteas will energise the Momentum Proteas to elevate their game to the greatest heights and inspire young women from all backgrounds to take up cricket and aspire to compete at the highest levels of the game. »
