Before leaving South Africa after their 10-day visit, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex visited President Cyril Ramaphosa and his wife at Mahlamba Ndlopfu in Tshwane and exchanged gifts, several of them centered around the famed Ankole cattle that Ramaphosa breeds.
The duchess first gave the first lady, Dr Tshepo Motsepe, a copy of her cookbook. (Watch video below.)
On a video of the exchange, Prince Harry was then heard saying to Ramaphosa, “I hear you like cattle,” and presented him with a large, framed photograph of cattle.
“Look at my cattle!” Ramaphosa said, turning the photograph around for the cameras of the media who were nearby taking pictures. Not to be outdone, Ramaphosa then reached for his own present for Prince Harry, a copy of his book, “Cattle of the Ages, Ankole Cattle in South Africa.”
“So I have brought you a book I wrote,” he said.
Ramaphosa, who breeds the cattle in Mpumalanga, apparently fell in love with the breed of cattle when he saw them in Uganda in 2004. The Banyankole people of Uganda call them “the king’s cattle”.
According to blurb for the book, it is “a narrative and pictorial celebration of the Ankole, the most magnificent breed of cattle in the world. In this majestic book, Cyril Ramaphosa reveals his passion and love for cattle as he introduces us to the magnificent Ankole cattle, originating in Uganda, and now, through his intervention, flourishing in South Africa.”
