South African-born and raised Elon Musk has made many South Africans proud by speaking up for the importance of the Paris Climate Accord, and standing up to the president of his adopted country, the USA – President Donald Trump… who announced Thursday he would withdraw the United States from the Paris Accord.

Yesterday billionaire entrepreneur Musk, who founded Tesla and SpaceX (amongst many other achievements), had warned in a tweet: “Don’t know which way Paris will go, but I’ve done all I can to advise directly to POTUS [President of the United States], through others in WH [White House] & via councils, that we remain.”

After Trump’s withdrawal announcement, the South African expat (and now American Canadian) resigned from his position on Trump’s economic advisory council.

Musk tweeted: “Am departing presidential councils. Climate change is real. Leaving Paris is not good for America or the world.”

Unfortunately Donald Trump is not listening… or rather, he’s listening to other people.

The Paris Accord was a landmark global agreement, made in 2015, to fight climate change… and heralded new hope as countries around the world pledged to support action to save the planet.

Trump said Thursday that he would “renegotiate the deal” but that it would be “fine” if the renegotiation failed.

China has announced it will stick to the Paris deal, regardless of Trump’s decision. According to Musk, “Under Paris deal, China committed to produce as much clean electricity by 2030 as the US does from all sources today…”

Musk – a former Pretoria Boys High student – has been tweeting from popular expat destination Australia, where he is on a business holiday with his children and girlfriend, actress Amber Heard.
