President Jacob Zuma and Public Protector Thuli Madonsela have congratulated Durban DJ and music producer DJ Black Coffee for his fantastic achievement, becoming the first South African music artist to win a Black Entertainment Television (BET) award.
As reported last night, Black Coffee was announced as the winner in the ‘Best International Act – Africa’ category in LA yesterday (see the congratulatory tweets here). This was the first BET nomination for 40-year-old Black Coffee, whose real name is Nkosinathi Maphumulo.
“DJ Black Coffee continues to inspire our youth with this achievement and has now become our prime international export in the music industry, as an example of the South African youth talent.
“Our nation is immensely proud of him and this achievement in particular. We congratulate him most heartily,” said President Zuma.
Advocate Madonsela said: “Congratulations @RealBlackCoffee for #BETAward thus proudly flying the South African Flag.”
The BET Awards were established in 2001 to celebrate African-Americans and other minorities in music, acting, sports, and other fields of entertainment.
Black Coffee’s career has spanned just over a decade with his most recent album ‘Pieces of Me’ going to number one on iTunes on the day of release. As one of the most respected DJs in the world – winning gold at the DJ Awards in party hotspot Ibiza, he also recently won the Ubuntu Award in South Africa for his contribution to Arts and Cultural Diplomacy internationally.
One of his biggest fans is American star P Diddy who posted photos and videos of Black Coffee on social media in March during the Ultra Music Festival in Miami, saying: “The best music at #ultra is HERE!! The World Famous @realblackcoffee bringing the Africa vibrations live!”
