Firefighting helicopters battled to get a fire under control on Signal Hill in Cape Town yesterday. Zaahid Appoles captured these photos which show the helicopters dropping water bombs as the fire moved into a gully on the slopes of the mountain, making it difficult for firefighters on the ground to reach it.
Efforts to put out the fire, which started in the late afternoon, were also hampered by strong south-westerly winds which caused billowing clouds of smoke.
Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Services were kept busy with not only the Signal Hill fire but also another on the slopes of Gordon’s Bay which required 64 firefighters on the scene.
According to a spokesperson for the Fire and Rescue Services no injuries were reported and property was safe. Thank you to all involved in keeping it that way!
