South African National Parks (SANParks) has published a series of beautiful photos, taken by tourist Dan Streck in the Kruger National Park in South Africa, capturing a rarely seen event – an elephant giving birth in the water.
SANParks said: “Well have you ever???”
The Park thanked Dan for sharing his once-in-a-lifetime sighting, and said the waterbirth moment was captured at Olifants River in the Kruger. SANParks said the incredible photos were taken from Olifants Bridge. (The use of drones is forbidden in the Kruger.)
Dan told SANParks: “The first image shows the amniotic sac, before delivery.
“After delivery, the elephants gathered in a phalanx around the baby, but the baby couldn’t stand and was floundering in the water.
“An older female stepped in and, working with the mother, held the baby’s head out of the water.
“Slowly, the baby gained its footing and began to stumble, then walk and within an hour was leading its mother around…
“I feel so fortunate to have experienced this and I hope you enjoy.”
As they say, it takes a village…
