Award-winning South African drama ‘Otelo Burning’is now available for people outside of South Africa to download and watch.

Otelo Burning film posterThe film tells the emotional coming-of-age story about three teenagers in a township who discover joy – and freedom – through surfing at the end of apartheid. It’s based on a true story.

‘Otelo Burning’ was screened at several film festivals around the world, and received 17 international awards including Winner Best Film African Magic Awards, Best Child Actor and Cinematography African Academy Awards, and Best South African Film, Cape Winelands Film Festival.

The film was shot in Durban by award-winning documentary director and producer Sara Blecher. Her previous projects include ‘Surfing Soweto’ about the lives – and deaths – of so-called ‘train surfers’ in South Africa.

The Executive Producer is Kevin Fleischer whose credits include ‘White Wedding’ which was South Africa’s entry in the Foreign Language category of the 2010 Academy Awards.

The New York Times Critics Pick described ‘Otelo Burning’ as a “lovely…coming of age story with a grand sweep of history as its background” while the Hollywood Reporter said it’s “Apartheid meets surfing in well-acted period drama.”
