One of the oldest houses in Johannesburg is in Emmarentia and was built in about 1886 by a city pioneer Louw Geldenhuys, after whose wife the suburb was named.
Set in a beautiful garden towered over by massive palms, the first thing that catches your eye is the gorgeous, wide, red polished-floor stoop, with columns the size of upright cannons, where you just want to hang out in one of the cushy couches and drink a daiquiri or read a thick book.
The owners, who are selling after having lived there for almost 25 years to downsize, said the house was full of wonderful memories. The house, which was the original farmstead on the farm Braamfontein, has been treated by them with all the love that people who appreciate the past could give it.
