With fires out of control in parts in the Southern Cape, the NSPCA Disaster Teams are now also assisting people to evacuate.

NSPCA announced Saturday afternoon that another NSPCA Disaster Team will be dispatched to the Eastern Cape first thing tomorrow morning from Gauteng and Kulula.com has once again donated the flights for free.

Earlier today the NSPCA Disaster Teams spotted a herd of cattle in the direct line of the fire. The fire was moving very quickly… but there was a river separating the NSPCA Disaster Team from getting to the cattle quickly. The Team fortunately saw a canoe and used that to go over the water to get to the animals, which they did! The cattle were successfully moved to a place of safety.

The second NSPCA Disaster Team was due to fly out of OR Tambo International Airport to George to assist with rescuing animals, but unfortunately the flight is delayed as a result of the bad weather conditions in George, with wind described by the NSPCA as “beyond hectic and visibility is poor as a result of all the smoke.”

National Senior Inspector Naz Appalsamy described the scene in Knysna with tears in his eyes as “some of the places look like hell on earth”.

NSPCA says: “Please keep our staff in your thoughts as they continue to rescue animals and people.”

HOW TO HELP:

Any financial assistance that the NSPCA can get would be sincerely appreciated. Donations can be made via their website here: http://nspca.co.za/donate/.
Alternatively, SMS the word CARE to 38018 (Each SMS costs R25, network & admin fees apply).

PLEASE NOTE:

Knysna Animal Welfare Society also urgently needs help. Donations can be made online at the KAWS website… or use the details in the legitimate image below. KAWS also encourages people to donate to Sedgefield Animal Matters and Plett Animal Welfare – because none of them are SPCAs.
