A new portrait photograph of Queen Elizabeth II was released on Wednesday (1 June), ahead of celebrations to mark the queen’s Platinum Jubilee which start on Thursday (2 June).
There will be four days of events, parties and parades to honour the 96-year-old’s record-breaking reign (70 years!).
The Royal Family said: “Her Majesty The Queen, the first Monarch in British history to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee. To mark the beginning of the #PlatinumJubilee Celebration Weekend, a new portrait of The Queen has been released.”
The photo – which shows Queen Elizabeth smiling near a window in the Victoria Vestibule – was taken by Ranald Mackechnie. The Vestibule is part of the Queen’s private apartments at Windsor Castle.
On Wednesday the Queen said she had been inspired by the outpouring of goodwill ahead of the Jubilee celebrations, and that she hoped they would provide an opportunity to glance back on the achievements of the past seven decades. She said:
“Thank you to everyone who has been involved in convening communities, families, neighbours and friends to mark my Platinum Jubilee, in the United Kingdom and across the Commonwealth. I know that many happy memories will be created at these festive occasions.
“I continue to be inspired by the goodwill shown to me, and hope that the coming days will provide an opportunity to reflect on all that has been achieved during the last seventy years, as we look to the future with confidence and enthusiasm.”
The Royal Family said: “With over 200k events and 10-12 million people set to take part, we couldn’t be more excited!”
