ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA – Chadian Foreign Minister Hon. Moussa Faki Mahamat has been elected incoming Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission by the gathered AU heads of State and Government, who form the Assembly of the African Union.
Mahamat’s dream is for an Africa where the “sound of guns will be drowned out by cultural songs and rumbling factories”.
The 56-year-old was Chad’s Minister of Foreign Affairs until this appointment, and Prime Minister between 2003 and 2005.
According to the BBC, he is dedicated to streamlining the AU’s bureacracy, and promoting development and security. The term of his new position is four years.
Ghana’s Ambassador Thomas Kwesi Quartey was elected Deputy Chairperson.
Elections for the eight Commissioner posts are ongoing.
President Jacob Zuma arrived in Addis Ababa on Saturday to attend the 28th Ordinary Session of the AU Assembly. The Session, which ends tomorrow, has been held under the theme: “Harnessing the Demographic Dividend through Investment in the Youth”.
