Braam Malherbe and Wayne Robertson arrived in Cape Town on Monday morning to a superhero’s welcome… after rowing 6,700 km – from Cape to Rio – to help save the planet! And amongst those waiting to congratulate them was South Africa’s favourite chicken peri-peri chain, Nando’s!
The world-famous extreme adventurer took on the epic journey as part of the inspiring DOT Challenge – Do One Thing… and save the planet! More here: http://dotchallenge.org/
And world-famous Nando’s said it is proud to have been able to lend him a hand (or some oars) on his journey. Oars that made more than 2.3-million strokes to get Malherbe and his rowing partner, Robertson, safely to Brazil.
“Braam’s incredible feat of endurance and commitment is exactly what the South African spirit is all about.
“His example of African excellence is the reason why a brand like Nando’s is drawn to supporting his efforts, because excellence is what drives and fires us up every day,” said Deirdre King, Head of Brand Experience at Nando’s.
Malherbe explained in a video recorded during the crossing that he wants to inspire as many people as the strokes it took in the crossing “to do one thing to change the world, and make it a better place. It doesn’t have to be a big thing… As I see it, you are either part of the solution or part of the problem – make the right choice.”
Malherbe has accomplished remarkable feats of endurance. In 2011 he was one of three teams out of six to finish an unaided race to the South Pole. For 40 days Malherbe pulled a sled in -45℃ conditions in high polar winds.
Four years later he ran 4,300km of the Great Wall of China, running 43km daily – which is the equivalent of a marathon every day, for 98 days. The objective was to encourage children and ordinary people to have big dreams because they could be achieved, Malherbe said of his extraordinary undertaking.
Malherbe’s commitment to firing up people’s imagination and getting people inspired to think and care about issues of sustainability is central to Nando’s business philosophy, Place says.
“We know that there must have been a few times over the past few months of rowing every day and night that Braam and Wayne must have wished they had wings instead. Now you’re back, guys, we’ll hook you up with some of those!” King quipped!
Malherbe was also welcomed at the airport by the boys from his old school, Rondebosch Boys High. He tweeted afterwards: “Was so special to have boys from my old school at the airport. Thank you.”
