Johan Eybers from Gauteng took a photo that went viral on Facebook, saying “Wow! This is historical. Trevor is one of a handful South Africans that made the front page of Time. Making us proud!”

Wits student Duzi Ntshingila tweeted a photo saying: “This is astonishing. Congratulations to @Trevornoah for being such an inspiration. So proud!”

And Duzi’s tweet got retweeted by none other than the South African comedian himself, who said: “Wow it looks even crazier on a news stand. Look mom, I’m on the cover of Time magazine.”

And now, Nando’s – the restaurant chain that’s done so well globally it knows all about making South Africans proud  – has fired up the nation’s pride with a special message saying in large bold letters: “Congrats, Trevor. It’s about Time…”, and then in smaller letters beneath: “that the world enjoyed a healthy taste of South Africa’s fire”.

This issue of Time magazine pays tribute to Next Generation Leaders, calling Trevor “The Seriously Funny Comedian”.

Although The Daily Show’s viewership figures, since Trevor took over, have not yet surpassed Jon Stewart’s farewell season, the international viewership has risen hugely – now watched in 176 countries, compared to just 70 before.

Trevor tells Time: “Donald Trump has made everyone interested in everything, everywhere. He’s a worldwide phenomenon… And with everything that’s going on—the Muslim ban, threats to women’s rights, the environment — I feel like I can finally say the show has a purpose.”

He also says he relates to President Trump, as a fellow performer: “When I watch him, I see a comedian. I see somebody who loves an audience. Someone who likes to be liked… You see the standing ovation in front of you, and yet the newspapers are writing that you’re not doing well. And the performer’s mind goes, ‘This is a world that’s clearly lying because I’m doing well, and it is against me.’”

One of Time Magazine’s other featured Next Generation Leaders is Oscar Ekponimo (30) from Nigeria… who has developed Chowberry, an app which connects grocery stores and supermarkets with NGOs and charities so that left over food items can be distributed to orphanages and families in need.
