Here’s one of the many powerful photos from the protests against the leadership of President Jacob Zuma on Friday 7 April 2017 in South Africa…
It depicts a woman, moved to protest, by a president that no longer seems to be taking care of his countrymen and women.
The simple placard says: “Mr Zuma When will you hear?”
What makes it even more powerful is the photo alongside it which shows the same woman, holding a similar poster 33 years ago… asking President PW Botha the same question.
The pictures were uploaded by Darryn Holm, DA Makana ward 12 councillor. He tweeted: “Member of the Black Sash in 1984 and in 2017. Same spot, same question, different President. #AntiZumaMarch #FreedomFriday #MarchforChange.”
Editor’s Update: We think the lady in the photo is Rosemary Smith, but we are not 100% sure. Rosemary is an amazing woman who moved from England to SA in the ’60s with her South African husband. They settled in Grahamstown, had 4 children, and she became a member of the Black Sash, taking part in political events over the course of 30 years. She has written a memoir called ‘Swimming with Cobras’.
