Congratulations to the South African Police Service (SAPS) who have today arrested suspects in the Menzi Primary School robbery incident which rocked South Africa earlier this week.
The stolen goods have been found at a shop in downtown Johannesburg.
The brand new state-of-the-art school – which cost R105,508,403 to build – had been officially opened less than a week before the crime was committed.
MEC Panyaza Lesufi said authorities were certain the robbery in Tsakane, in Ekurhuleni, was pulled off by an organised crime syndicate. The perpetrators had apparently tied up two patrollers, and broken the main vault door to access the keys to the entire school.
The criminals had got away with all 185 learners’ tablets, 8 teacher laptops, 2 data projectors, 3 desktop projectors, plasma TV, petty cash of less than R500 as well as a digital video recorder with the hard drive.
At the time, a bitterly disappointed Lesufi challenged the community to work together with authorities to hunt down the robbers. It paid off!
Today, just after midday, Lesufi announced on Facebook:
BREAKING NEWS!! We have found our stolen school property! At this Jhb downtown shop, Cnr Mooi and Helen Joseph Street. Thank you so so much for your support and to the Police for their swift action! #CrimeDoesnotPay #MenziPrimary
One Gauteng resident said: “So Minister in waiting gave a deadline on Tuesday and he was slammed for it. He said if the stolen goods were not found by the 18th he was going to withdraw all projects at that school! His threat worked!
“This is what should happen in Vuwani, you burn the school, Library, Clinic or any public infrastructure, our government does not rebuild until the perpetrators are caught! Well done to our National MEC!”
Another said: “Someone bottle Mr Lesufi’s work ethic and give it to others! Of course we know he works with a whole phenomenal team but he is a great leader and that makes it ‘easier’ to excel as a team! Bravo!!!!!”
Many also said the work of the SAPS on this matter is commendable??.
Yesterday hundreds of concerned parents gathered at the school to assist police trace the criminals. Lesufi said: “The community is very angry. ? They believe this was an inside job.”
