Mayday! Mayday! Mayday! Well, Mother’s Day to be exact!
Us guys who live in the UK thought we’d already adequately fulfilled our obligations for Mother’s Day on 30 March. Cards, coffee mugs, flowers, you name it, we bought it.
Little did we know that the UK is one of the only places in the world that uses the Christian ritual of Mothering Sunday, which falls on the fourth Sunday in Lent, as its Mother’s Day.
Just about everywhere else uses the tradition started 106 years ago in the USA where Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May.
So if your mom is in SA, Zimbabwe, Australia, New Zealand, the USA or Canada (or most of the rest of the world in fact – see the full list below) and you haven’t thought about it yet, you have less than 24 hours to get it together because it is tomorrow!!!
Now one could complain about the commercialization of the day, pointing out that, according to Wikipedia, it was only invented in 1908 when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother in Grafton, West Virginia. And even Ms Jarvis had been disappointed with its commercialization by the 1920s.
But there’s no point in fighting it. It’ll end in tears – probably yours! Rather use the opportunity to honour your mom and make her feel as special as she is!
For those who’ve forgotten (and even those who haven’t), SAPeople has a way you can do so without getting caught up in the commercial side of Mother’s Day or spending a cent – simply send us the message for your mom (along with a photo if you wish) – and we will publish it tomorrow (Sunday 11 May 2014) for your mom to see!
