South Africa has pretty much kept up with the global wave of great new coffee – some call it speciality/specialty coffee, or third wave coffee, or whatever – along with countries like the United States, Australia and Great Britain. So not only is there Starbucks (in the U.S. and elsewhere, soon in South Africa too), Costa and others in the UK, and Mugg & Bean in South Africa.

There are also the new kids on the block – some have been around for a while now – and often they lead the way in innovation and pure great coffee. In Johannesburg, there are places like Father and Doubleshot in Braamfontein, the Motherland stores, as well as Bean There at 33 Stanley in Milpark.

Cape Town too has seen a proliferation of shops, with Deluxe, Truth Coffee Roasting (recently named the best coffee shop in the world in the Telegraph) and Origin, as well as smaller players like the new Department of Coffee in Khayelitsha.

And let’s not forget that there are coffee roasters too, including Truth, Origin, Deluxe, Bean There and even Strictly Coffee in Robertson. Coffee, as they say, is bursting out all over!

Remember, this list is by no means comprehensive. It’s a reason to start exploring.
