As the two week strike from Pikitup draws to a close today in Johannesburg, here’s a shout out to the hardworking guys at Carlton Zambesi Butchery who’ve been doing their best to clean up the mounting rubbish.
Mario Pregueiro from Carlton Zambesi captured these photos of the scene on Tuesday after the Pikitup March.
“The march through JHB brought chaos,” he told SAPeople, “but Carlton Zambesi guys – in red – cleaned up the streets again. All credit to them.
“If we don’t clean this, we have to work in it.”
Other local Braamfontein owners were reported to be resorting to laying rat traps as the rubbish piled higher in some streets.
The 5,000 South African Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu) members began an “unprotected” strike a couple of weeks ago after being disgruntled with salary adjustments, changes to some policies and a lack of protective clothing.
Reports tonight are that the strike is now over and members will be back at work tomorrow, Friday.
