South African tennis player Lloyd Harris has torpedoed his way through to the third round in the Australian Open Men’s Singles with a 5-set thriller. This is his first time advancing this far in the competition.
In a dramatic three-hour match that saw the points see-saw between each player, Lloyd held on to win against Australia’s Alexei Popyrin. The final score was: 6-2, 1-6, 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-3.
According to Tennis South Africa, Lloyd showed “real fighting spirit” and served 25 aces.
The 23-year-old from Cape Town will next play either 22nd seed Borna Coric or Mackenzie McDonald who is unseeded.
Lloyd’s ATP ranking is currently 91, but 2021 looks off to a good start, and this could be the year he beats his career high of 72 (achieved on 22 July 2019).
