Letshego Zulu has successfully made it to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro exactly a year after her husband – racing car driver Gugu Zulu – died while attempting to summit the mountain in Tanzania last year.
On the anniversary of his tragic death (which occurred while attempting the summit together last year), Letshego has beaten the odds to courageously reach the pinnacle this year in honour of him.
Along with the #Trek4Mandela climbers, she left base camp for the summit of Uhuru Peak at 23h00 on the eve of Mandela Day – 18 July – and reached the summit on Mandela Day, yesterday.
The Nelson Mandela Foundation confirmed yesterday that “The #Trek4Mandela climbers have successfully summited #Kilimanjaro & are currently on their way down the mountain.”
So far the #Trek4Mandela initiative has collected over 350,000 sanitary pads for girls. It aims to reach two million girls by 2020.
