Legendary South African-based adventurer Kingsley Holgate recently set off on his latest adventure. This one’s called ‘Afrika Odyssey’ and is his 41st geographic and humanitarian journey.

This trip is a collaboration with African Parks and will see . Kingsley, Ross and the Expedition team said:

“After countless journeys, which have included all 55 countries in Africa, we’ve grown to deeply appreciate Africa’s unique biodiversity and iconic wildlife, which are now under immense threat. The continent-wide decimation of endangered animals such as elephant and rhino and the destruction of vast tracts of pristine forests, wetlands and grasslands that are home to thousands of other wildlife species don’t make the headlines anymore – it’s all too much doom and gloom.

“For many years, we’ve been asking the question: where can one find hope for Africa’s critically needed wild spaces and irreplaceable fauna and flora, as well as the communities that depend on them? Thankfully, there are powerful and positive stories emerging from across the African continent – uplifting narratives that need to be told. Through this new expedition to connect 22 African Parks-managed landscapes in 12 diverse African countries encompassing 20 million hectares under protection, we hope to draw attention to the incredible work that’s being done, and provide support to the communities alongside.”

This expedition, which has been months in the planning, is the first, real-life test on African soil for the new Defender 130. So far it’s been amazing, even tougher than the old Defenders according to Kingsley. In Zambia this week, the tyres have been deflated as they’ve left the tar road for deep sand… and the adventure continues.

Kingsley’s challenge is to reach some of the wildest and most remote regions on the African continent.

Last year the team made world headlines when they travelled 35,000km overland from Cape Agulhas, on the southern tip of Africa, all the way north to Nordkapp, in Norway’s Arctic Circle.

Full carbon-neutral

The entire Afrika Odyssey expedition will be a fully carbon-neutral expedition. The 6,000 indigenous trees Kingsley’s Foundation planted in 2021 on the Tanglewood Foundation’s Albany-thicket restoration project in the Eastern Cape of SA, will continue to offset this new journey’s carbon footprint.
