South African media have been celebrating the outstanding student’s scoop, using the hashtag – #WestvilleToHarvard.

His proud school said: “From Incepto ne Desistam to Veritas. From Westville Boys’ High School 2016 to Harvard University 2021.” (2021 refers to the year he will graduate.)

Westville Boys’ high said: “Our very special congratulations to Sasasa Dlamini on his acceptance to Harvard for 2017. He will study Philosophy and Economics. Sasa excelled in his NSC exams attaining 7 As.

“He was a member of the senior KZN Debating Team and was awarded the Leadership through Service and Trust Scholarship at Speech Night last year.”

His father, Nichoulas Dlamini, told the local Independent on Saturday newspaper: “We were ecstatic on hearing the news. We are so blessed. My wife and I believe in education for our three children. We come from Mlazi and feel indebted to this school, which is the epitome of what a school should be in the South African context in terms of transformation.”

Sasasa – nicknamed Sasa – told local media that he’d determined to learn from the world and bring it back to South Africa.

The US Embassy in South Africa also congratulated Sasasa, who is an EducationUSA member, on his early acceptance to Harvard.

The Embassy said: “In addition to his academics, he is an avid debater, representing KZN at nationals, and enjoys athletics (long jump) and basketball.”

Sasasa told the Embassy that he wants to “engage with people from different backgrounds from me, and truly broaden my horizons and my understanding as a global citizen. I’ve worked hard and played to my strengths… I want to stretch myself and my ability to help change the circumstances of people.”
