London’s famous O2 Arena is used to hosting major music concerts… but none as unique as last night’s event with South African expat Kevin Anderson.

After beating Austrian Dominic Thiem, Kevin turned to the audience and asked them to join him in singing Happy Birthday to his wife Kelsey.

Thiem was outplayed by the SA debutant who won 6-3 7-6(10). Anderson is next up against number nine Japan’s Kei Nishikori who beat Roger Federer yesterday.

Reuters said Wimbledon runner-up Kevin was arguably yesterday’s most impressive performer as he became the first South African since Wayne Ferreira in 1995 to qualify for the ATP Finals.

“He repelled a fierce Thiem fightback, saving a couple of set points in the second set tiebreak before clinching a debut win with his 13th ace — celebrating by inviting the crowd to join in a verse of “happy birthday” to his watching wife Kelsey…”

It was the perfect start to the ATP Finals for Kevin, who has made this trip to London a family affair – his mother has flown over from South Africa, and has been enjoying some sight-seeing with Kevin and his wife whilst in the UK’s capital city.

Kevin and Kelsey met at the University of Illinois and married in 2011. She takes care of all his admin work. Apart from Mom, the Andersons are also joined by Lady Kady, their Chiweenie (chihuahua and dachshund mix) which they adopted last year.

Kevin – who is 6ft 8in – told Sky Sports that he’s started to become more recognised by fans when he’s out and about.

He also said: “This was a big goal of mine, making the O2 here, so I’m very happy with that. It has also been a great year for me highlighted by making the final at Wimbledon.”

Kelsey told Sky: “What I’ve enjoyed the most is the fact that Kevin works incredibly hard… and just to be able to see him continue to improve and continue to reap the benefits of all the hard work he has put in has been really rewarding for me. I think he’s incredibly deserving and it’s been a fun journey to be a part of and watch from the sidelines.”

The couple is based in South Florida, USA.
