Former Springbok fly-half Joel Stransky is on the road to recovery after his horrific injuries in the Cape Epic mountain bike race. He posted a photo today from the race saying how “cool” it was to be there “watching friends come in”. He was discharged this morning.
Stransky (49) has kept fans updated with photos and tweets from hospital, since the crash during the opening Prologue of the Cape Epic, at Meerendal Wine Estate in Durbanville, Western Cape.
On Sunday he said he had had a “nasty fall, bad face cuts, broken rib & punctured lung! Need plastic surgery to restore good looks!”
The following day, after the news made headlines internationally, he said he was “completely overwhelmed at support & well wishes from all over world! Thank you! Surgery went well, lung on mend, almost pretty again!”
Today he reported he was finally out of hospital and thanked doctors and staff “for taking great care of me”.
He also gave a special shout out to Rovos Rail Tours who have kindly offered him a lift back to Johannesburg in style, since his injuries prevent him from being able to fly at the moment.
This was Stransky’s eighth Cape Epic.
