A doctor at a hospital in Johannesburg had an awakening on Christmas Day that’s worth sharing with everyone…
The young male doctor, originally from the Western Cape, wrote: “I was on call this Xmas. I don’t celebrate this holiday but this turned out to be an extremely meaningful time for me.
“I was called to the ward to re-drip a young girl who I had dripped earlier in the day. She was critically ill with a very poor prognosis.
“I was told she had pulled out her drip and feeding tube, and when I found her she was extremely distressed and was too short of breath to get any words out.
“She was frantically trying to communicate with me. Pointing, gesturing and trying to hold my hand. I gave her a piece of paper and a pen and she wrote the following: “Pray for me”; “Im dying” “sit next to me”; “don’t close the door”; “don’t go now wait a few minutes”
“I sat and held her hand and prayed for her until she was calm and fell asleep. I felt straight away that this interaction had hit home.
“It hasn’t changed me but rather brought me closer to who I really am.
“This first year of internship has been one of the toughest years for me, both physically and mentally. Working in a fractured society and health care system, frustration and circumstance has resulted in me losing my compassion towards patients.
“My innate strength is as a healer, but it has been suppressed by my environment. I noticed this specifically during paediatrics where I would see a baby alone in its cot crying… and didn’t have the time to hold and comfort him or her, or play with a child that was getting better. This is not who I am.
“This interaction with this extremely sick little girl was so eye-opening for me. No medical expert, procedure or medication could have helped her better than I did.
“All she needed was a warm and caring hand to hold and to know she was not alone.
“We live in a crazy world that has become so complicated that we have become blind. I see this with not only myself but others around me. We need spiritual healing and awakening. I feel society has distracted me from who I really am but now I feel like I’m moving in the right direction again.
“We all have a purpose in this world and I know I’m here to be a healing health professional who cares for patients holistically.
“My goal for 2017 is to simplify my life, Keep It Short and Simple (KISS mwah). May this year be one of love and healing for all.”
