Ja No, Afrikaans Named Sexiest Accent in the World

South Africans have been going crazy over a new list, published internationally, that places the Afrikaans South African accent at the TOP of all Sexiest Accents in the World… and the key to a foreigner’s heart.

The list of the Top 50 Countries in the World Ranked by Sexiness of their Accents was compiled by Lovin.ie (a website in Ireland) – and they do admit it’s probably not the most authentic survey. In fact nobody was surveyed. Their ranking tool was purely their “own trusty ears” (which are obviously VERY good!).

Times have changed since the Apartheid era when the South African accent was one of the most disliked accents – with British author Julie Birchill once describing it in a novel as an instant turn-off.

Now the Afrikaans accent is being celebrated for its husky raw sexiness. Lovin.ie say “Affrikaans is the key to our hearts.” (Okay, they spelt it wrong… but at least they love it!)

Italian comes second and Northern Ireland (they may be biased) comes third. The Australian is described as “v. sexy, hey” (no. 4), the Zimbabwean at 19 is “too strong”, American at 18 is “debatable” and New Zealand at 14 gets “bonus points for being more chill than Ozzie”. Dutch (at 22) which influenced Afrikaans is described as “tall, blonde, and handsomely spoken”…
