JUSTIN SULLIVAN is well known in South Africa for his dramatic photos and footage of the fires in the Western Cape. He recently visited Indonesia where his girlfriend was attending a yoga retreat in Bali. These are his impressions – including a beautiful video – of their 30-day visit…
“Every time I leave South Africa, I realise how beautiful our country is… but also how much work we still need to do to be able to enjoy this beauty.
“Indonesia was a bustle of energy and enriched with deep cultural roots. The architecture was unique in which each building was intrinsically decorated with gold brushing and interesting designs. Most families live together in their own little cove with personal shrines and temples.
“The people and landscapes were what reminded me most of South Africa (apart from the volcanos). Green rolling hills with rice fields, where we would have sugar cane. Rain forests were in place of highveld. Sheer Cliff face drop offs reminded me of mountains surrounding the Cape.
“There was definitely more water on the islands we visited. Coming from the Western Cape that is drought stricken, I was pretty shocked to see the amount of water being used just to wet the roads to alleviate dust. You couldn’t drive without a rain jacket in the highlands, as you were bound to get caught in a ‘monsoon type’ storm!”
Justin and his partner visited Bali, Gili Islands, Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Penida and Lombok.
“The people on each island were different, offering us various forms of hospitality. The majority of these tourists destinations rely solely on tourism, so everyone was extremely friendly and went out of their way to help…. which is something I think South Africans could learn from our Island friends; we often aren’t as welcoming to tourists. We most certainly don’t stop our vehicles in the middle of the road to greet a tourist and ask if they need help. Then again, most of our lives don’t depend on it.
“None the less, visiting Bali and the few islands around was a unique experience, giving us a beautiful understanding of its people and unforgettable memories of its untouched, pristine and somewhat prehistoric landscapes.”
Justin says this is one of the first of many Travel videos
