One is in Gauteng. The other in the Western Cape. The one carries heavy bottles of water to school – 5km each day – to help others; and the other cleans roadside gutters to uplift his community. They are Nkosinani and ‘Boeta’ (Clarence).

Hayley Fensham, from Somerset West, was on her way to Gordon’s Bay on Saturday when she passed through Sir Lowry’s Pass Village and saw Boeta hard at work, cleaning

“I was so impressed that I stopped and asked everyone nearby why he was doing it, and if someone had told him to do so,” she wrote on Facebook afterwards.

“The answers were that he does that kind of thing… no-one told him to do it. I said he should be made mayor of the village and they all said that he should someday. I shook his hand… told him what a great job he was doing and that he was setting a wonderful example.

“Please share this post to encourage other children to take initiative and to set such a wonderful example!”

Grade 2 pupil, Nkosinani, is another South African kid inspiring others. While many of us may complain about having to walk 5km to school – he not only walks the walk… but lugs heavy bottles of water with him to help those in drought-stricken areas of South Africa.

The photo above of Nkosinani was uploaded to Facebook page Water Shortage South Africa (WSSA) by Felicity Gratz-Lawlor.

Felicity says Nkosinani lives in Gauteng (where there is water), but carries the water for his school’s collection for towns in need of water.

Since uploading the post yesterday, South African social media users have come forward to give Nkosinani a bicycle so he can ride to school in future.

And Boeta also looks set to have a brighter future. Since Hayley uploaded the post about his gutter cleaning, a Boeta’s Buddies initiative has been set up by the Gordon’s Bay Group.

According to Hayley, a braai day will be held to celebrate Boeta’s work and a donation fund has been set up to help him with clothing and schooling.  The focus is to reward Boeta and his friends/family for his inspiration… and then to help others “willing to show this awesome initiative”. The Rotary club has also apparently asked for volunteers in the area help clean up Sir Lowry’s Pass Village.

As Hayley says: “There is hope… Great and wonderful things can grow from humble little people showing us the light!!”
