One year after a photo went viral around the world of Danish philanthropist, Anja Ringgren Lovén, giving water to a young, starving boy in Nigeria… she has recreated the pose with the now healthy and happy young boy, Hope.
Hope had been abandoned by his family because they claimed he was a ‘witch’.
Anja said: “On the 30 of January 2016 I went on a rescue mission with David Emmanuel Umem, Nsidibe Orok and our Nigerian team. A rescue mission that went viral, and today it’s exactly 1 year ago the world came to know a young little boy called Hope ????? This week Hope will start school ?”
Anja, founder of African Children’s Aid Education and Development Foundation ( ACAEDF), has rescued several children in similar circumstances in Nigeria.
She says she first saw the problems created by superstition in rural Nigeria when she traveled there alone three years ago and met children “who had been tortured and beaten almost to death because they were accused of being witches and therefore left alone on the street”.
She gave up everything she had back home in Denmark to set up the foundation for these children. Today she is married to Nigerian David Emmanuel Umem, and they have a son, David Jr (pictured above with Hope). Anja says: “I am proud of many things in my life, but nothing comes close to being a mother ❤”
