Snow has continued falling in parts of South Africa this weekend… allowing at least one holidaying couple – Marius and Christine – to enjoy the perfect ‘honeymoon’ weekend in Sani Pass… snowed in! (See pics below.)
For some travellers it’s been less exciting… as the inclement snowy and icy conditions led to road closures in the Drakensberg – between Underberg and Boston, on Oliviershoek Pass and Giants Castle was cut off too.
Sani Mountain Lodge (home of the highest pub in Africa!) posted the following series of photos of ‘honeymooners’ Marius and Christine arriving Friday night…
Snowed in on Saturday morning…
Thawing out with some morning coffee…
And a hot pot of mielie pap of course!
Regular SAPeople Twitter contributor Monique van der Walt had a “wonderful #shotleft” on the border of South Africa and Lesotho… where she got her passport stamped and her gumboots laden in snow.
According to Gareth Earl Robert, the snow on Sani was half a metre plus, and was still snowing heavily at around 3pm on Saturday afternoon.
He said: “Some shocking road sections and very muddy and slippery before you even get to the SA border… But it’s awesome up there.”
P.S. According to Pieter Badenhorst there are now three honeymoon couples, including him and his bride, stuck (happily) up at Sani Top!!! “Extra time for us,” he says. They are also joined by a “mad Swiss named Pascal who is bicycling the continent”. Writing on SAPeople’s timeline, Pieter says: “We’re all the only guests up here… and we are getting pampered by the Sani Pass top guys!” Enjoy and congratulations!

UPDATE Sunday Morning (14 May 2017):
Snow Report SA says: “It appears as if good snow has fallen overnight again over the majority of Lesotho and the entire KZN Drakensberg.” More snow – but lighter – is expected today.
Sani Pass Tours: “The snow has blocked SANI PASS near the top. The conditions are very hazardous and slippery therefore we do not advise people to self drive unless are very experienced 4X4 drivers.” Photo below by Stephanie Bentz.
