Great Start to Wimbledon for South Africa’s Kevin Anderson

South Africa’s Kevin Anderson has started Wimbledon on a great note, winning in three straight sets against Norbert Gombos on Monday in London.

The 32-year-old SA expat beat the Slovakian 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.

This evening Kevin tweeted: “Great start to @Wimbledon for me ? Thanks to everyone who came to Court No12 to support!”

On Wednesday, Anderson will face Andreas Seppi (Italy)… who he played against at the very same stage last year. Last year our super tall South African beat Seppi in straight sets. Let’s hope he can repeat that this year!

Anderson – who’s number 8 in the world – was knocked out of Queen’s in the first round last week, but said in a press conference today that it hasn’t knocked his confidence.

“First match on grass it’s always a little bit tricky…

“Coming in today really excited about playing here at Wimbledon, I feel like I’m playing good tennis.”

In the run-up to Wimbledon, Anderson’s been practising with the likes of Rafael Nadal, and tweeting photos of the incredible blue skies in London over the past week or so.

Of his match on Wednesday, Anderson says: “He’s a very clean ball striker, very experienced. I played a great match against him last year, so I’d love to bring out that same sort of form on Wednesday.

“But it’s always different. Conditions could be different. You have to be prepared for anything. But I have played him before. I have seen him playing, you know, many, many times, so my next match at least I’ll know what to expect from my opponent.”

This year, Anderson’s goal is to advance past the fourth round which would be a first for him at Wimbledon. At the French Open last month he made it to the last 16.

Speaking at the press conference today, Anderson said: “Hopefully looking forward to a good couple weeks here…”
