Fabio Aru, cycling for South Africa’s Team Qhubeka NextHash, finished second overall after four days of exciting racing around Sibiu, Romania.

Sport Director Alex Sans Vega said: “We certainly came to this race with hopes of standing on the top step of the podium at some point, and we came really close every day. Fabio was really impressive, he fought for it every day and the team really stepped up to help him.

“We can be proud of how we worked together, with a great Ubuntu spirit.”

The Italian cyclist, who signed up for a year’s contract with Team Qhubeka, showed he was arguably the strongest rider in the race on the second and third day, according to Team Qhubeka.

The UCI 2.1 Sibiu Tour got underway on Saturday. Qhubeka said that unfortunately the climbs in Romania were long but not steep enough for the strong climber to make enough of a gap.

“Aru sprinted to 2nd place on the 2nd stage behind Aleotti and the 3rd stage, he finished in 3rd place in another small group sprint on top of the mountain. This saw Aru go into the final day 2nd on GC, but now with duties to look after (fellow Team Qhubeka rider) Reinardt Janse van Rensburg for the final sprint.

“Ackermann took out the final stage while Janse van Rensburg finished 7th in the uphill cobbled sprint. There was a crash in the final 500m and Aru lost some seconds to Michal Schlegel (Elkov Kasper) but after the necessary adjustments, Aleotti topped the overall podium with Aru in 2nd and Schlegel in 3rd place,” said Team Qhubeka.

Meanwhile in France, Team Qhubeka enjoyed a calmer sprint on Wednesday in the Tour de France (a race which Aru came fifth in, in 2017).

The Sibiu Tour title went to Aru’s fellow Italian compatriot Giovanni Aleotti.
