American talk show host and comedian, Ellen DeGeneres has been enjoying a fruitful trip to Africa with wife, Australian actress Portia de Rossi, after her long-running daytime show – the Ellen DeGeneres Show – came to an end on 26 May 2022.
After spending almost two decades (19 seasons) entertaining audiences around the world with her humour, interviews and dancing, Ellen (64) is now chilling in the bush on safari in Africa, where she’s actually making a difference to conservation, and earlier this week opened the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund. According to her latest Instagram post (today), she’s currently in Zimbabwe.
Yesterday she posted a video of elephants and joked: “We’re out of LA but still hit traffic.” Portia could be seen in the safari vehicle watching the elephants – she was the only passenger in the moment enjoying nature… while everyone else was busy filming the scene on their phones! (Watch the video at bottom of page.)
Today Ellen posted four photos, including one in which she and Portia (49) are holding hands and clearly enjoying the well-deserved break. Her caption stated simply: “Safari life.”
Many proud Zimbabweans pointed out the photos were taken in Singita Malilangwe in Chiredzi Zimbabwe.
One fan said: “That’s right my girl!! You deserve that time off. You’ve done a wonderful job of keeping the world and not just America entertained. It’s time to entertain yourself and your family. I love you Ellen.”
Rwanda residents also thanked Ellen for visiting their country and for the huge difference she’s making there. Ellen and Portia were in Rwanda for the opening ceremony of the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, on 7 June, where they were welcomed by the President of Rwanda.
Ellen has been a fan of Fossey since she was 12, and on her 60th birthday four years ago, Portia helped fund Fossey’s Fund in honour of Ellen. Portia says she bought the gift because “over the years Ellen has met the most amazing people on earth, really, yet the person who had the greatest impact on her was someone she never met, Dian Fossey. I didn’t want to get her another watch. I knew the show was ending, and I wanted her to be engaged in something else she loved, plus I wanted her to remember what was important to her when she was a kid.”
Ellen told The Hollywood Reporter: “When Portia gave me this gift, there were 800 gorillas, and today there are around 1,100. So it’s really made a difference, bringing awareness.”
She said her experience of gorilla trekking was life-changing, and she hopes to become even more involved with conservation and her passion for saving animals.
