Heavy winds have wreaked havoc with the surf in the past 24 hours in Durban, KwaZulu Natal. Photographer NIC ABERDEIN captured these photos of the scene this morning.
He said that despite “howling winds” the waves on the South African coast were “not as big as expected”.
Yesterday EThekwini Municipality was forced to issue a press release refuting claims made in a false weather warning which was circulated on social media and via email.
The Municipality denied that any advisory had been given regarding gale force winds and said that while “heavy winds” had been predicted last night, residents had “not been encouraged to remain indoors as the hoax statement suggests”.
The Municipality estimated last night’s wind speeds to be 55km/hour with gusts peaking at 72km.
Some parts of Durban were left without electricity after strong winds affected cables, and residents in informal settlements were advised to secure their roof sheeting.
