The Durban Survivors’ Dance Crew have sent an impassioned plea to Ellen DeGeneres, requesting sponsorship for a trip to Los Angeles, USA, which would uplift the recognition of South Africa in the dance industry.
The letter says: “Our group name is Survivors Dance Crew and we are based in Durban. The crew was established in 2013. Survivors are very motivated and well driven by the love and passion for dance.
“One of our biggest disadvantage as a crew was not having the facilities or studio space to train or to improve on our dance skills which also makes rehearsal for shows, gigs and competitions a challenge for us.
“We use a local soccer field as our practice place. We were also not fortunate enough to have the right sound equipment but because of our love, desire and passion we had no choice but to use our mobile phones for music.
“Out of all the obstacles we faced and the lack of resources we still pushed harder and entered competitions in which most of them we placed first.
“That became an even bigger motivation for us to work even harder to make a change in the dance industry. This is when our dance crew became well-known and respected.
“The crew has achieved quite a lot since the day we started our journey and one of our biggest achievement was winning Shield Do Dance competition in 2013, making us the first dance crew in South Africa to be invited to perform as guest performers in the World Of Dance in America New Jersey in 2014.
“The Survivors Dance Crew has been uplifting and inspiring other dancers and dance companies in Durban by hosting dance workshops. We try our best to share the talent and knowledge we have absorbed through our experience with the Youth of Durban.
“The Dance industry in Durban has always been underrated when compared to other cities in South Africa. We as Survivors have been putting in the time and have been doing whatever it takes to put Durban on the map.
“We have won big competitions which included all dancers and competitors from all provinces in South Africa Break Da Beat is one of the biggest competitions which was aired on SABC 1 and we were crowned South Africa’s best Dance Crew.
“We would like to thank you so much for taking the time and considering our letter. We are enthusiastic about sharing all our upcoming experiences and adventures with our community and we hope that you would like to be a part of our journey.
“As we work hand in hand uplifting and making a change in the Durban youth and the rest of the Country.”
Now the country holds its breath as we wait for Ellen’s response… (If any expats in LA have contacts… the Survivors Dance Crew is worth it, please help!!!)
