The SONA2016 debate might be over, and while there were some pretty low points, there were also some highs worth remembering. One of them was the speech of the Democratic Alliance’s Zakhele Mbhele.
Only 31 years old, and the shadow minister of police, he talks the talk a lot better than parliamentarians twice his age. And his speech packs a punch – watch him even correct the Chief Whip of the African National Congress.
He takes to task the minister of energy, Tina Joemat-Pettersson, who had just spoken, singing the praises of Zuma and her own department despite load-shedding, as well as the minister of water, Nomvula Mokonyane (who seems to be laughing in embarrassment).
On his Twitter page, Mbhele describes himself as “Proudly South African. Unapologetically & classically liberal: liberty, choice, opportunity. Durbanite by birth, Joburger by culture, Capetonian by citizenship.”
