(A further 676 house burglaries – when the victim is not home or threatened – occur daily.) This Sunday’s Carte Blanche explores your legal rights when experiencing a house invasion. Home Intruder Shootings
Earlier this month a fiercely protective Middelburg father gunned down three armed intruders, killing two of them, when he feared for his wife and baby’s lives. About a week later another family man in Pretoria shot and killed two armed suspects, after discovering them in his driveway (with stolen goods from his home already packed into their vehicle).
According to Carte Blanche, research shows that home invasions are one of the most feared crimes in South Africa, and that “increasingly, homeowners are stepping up and using force to fight back and defend themselves and their families”.
But is “self-defence” a feasible plea in a court of law… or could you be charged with murder?
Devi Sankaree Govender looks at the increase in violent home invasions in South Africa, and explores your legal rights in protecting you and your loved ones in the terrifying event of your home being invaded.
Don’t miss this segment, produced by Nicky Troll – this Sunday in South Africa, and streaming on Showmax from Tuesday.
