Charlize Theron has revealed in an interview with W Magazine that she has a bad temper which has sometimes got her into trouble… particularly at the start of her career when she hadn’t yet learned how to channel her energy.
In the interview (watch below), Charlize says that during the famous catfight scene with Teri Hatcher in ‘2 Days in the Valley’, she “hit her really bad”.
The movie launched Charlize’s Hollywood career, and the scene is rated on Rotten Tomatoes as one of the Top 20 Greatest Fight Scenes Ever. A video of the scene has been viewed over 1 million times on YouTube (watch below)!
Charlize told the magazine she didn’t quite knock out Teri’s teeth “but I think she was bruised”. She says everyone was mortified because Teri Hatcher was a big star at the time, and she was just this clumsy “bleached-blonde-Amazonian, catsuit-wearing nobody who was punching her in the face, I was like a wild animal.
“Back then I didn’t know how to hone in my energy and I was knocking over lights. I had no concept of a set. I connected right with Teri Hatcher’s face. I felt terrible about it.
“I had no money and sent her some cheap beer the next day. Sorry, Teri.”
Since then Charlize has been on the receiving end of injuries, most recently during the filming of new movie ‘Atomic Blonde’ with James McCoy and Sofia Boutella. Charlize told the New York Times, “I remember it was day two, my body was hurting, and my face was all bruised up, and my eye was swollen shut.”
Many critics have likened Atomic Blonde’s Lorraine Broughton, an undercover MI6 agent, to James Bond. Charlize told W Magazine: “Yeah, Lorraine and James are equally messed up. Maybe they should marry! Maybe they should have a baby!”
Charlize – whose father was shot dead by her mother in self-defence in Gauteng when she was a teenager – also admitted she’s fascinated with why people do horrible things and reads a lot to get an understanding… but that it helps making movies like this in a safe environment. She says she’s a fan of action films, and that one of her first memories is watching ‘Die Hard’ and “just loving it. Maybe something’s wrong with me.”
She also said she has OCD and loves cleaning and doing the laundry, even at 4 in the morning.
Charlize also spoke to W Magazine about her first kiss – “In my backyard. In South Africa. I was 12. His name was Mickey Smith, and he had braces. He worked at the local video store, so I would see him all the time and flirt with him. We were really nervous about the kiss. We had set it up: This weekend, we are watching Friday the 13th and we are making out. But we stalled and stalled and stalled, and finally his mom was in the driveway honking for him, and we were like, ‘Come on, let’s just do it.’ And we did it. It was horrible. Super-rushed and terrible.”
She said he was the sweetest guy ever back then, but “he could be a serial killer now. I don’t know…”
