The difference between celebrating Christmas the UK or South African way is massive when you’re used to the other. Watch two bloggers from the UK and SA compare the differences they have found… (See the video below.)
Even though we share so many traditions from decorating Christmas trees to singing Christmas carols… the experience of a cosy indoor Christmas compared to celebrating under the summer sun is vastly different. And whether you’re used to building snowmen or sandcastles, both should probably be experienced at least once in a lifetime…
South African/London blogger, Natalie sums up the differences perfectly: “The typical South African Christmas period was all about braais, swimming, lounging around in the sun and hot summer days” whereas now living in the UK, Natalie says “everywhere you go there is Christmas decór and dazzling Christmas streetlight displays that make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.”

Whichever country you’re in, if you’re South African… a good bottle of SA wine is a perfect fit!
Although many South Africans tuck into more conventional Christmas dishes like Turkey and gammon, you’ll also find lots around their braais (which some find ‘sacrilegious’ – see video below!). You may also find some Zulu people enjoying amadumbe, while the Xhosa people feast on a dish that includes samp called umngqusho.
And for South Africans, a traditional Christmas dessert is of course malva pudding. (Check out our malva pudding recipes here.)
