This week’s episode of Carte Blanche investigates the sabotage of Metrorail, the crime wave hitting Stellenbosch and more. The show is available to South Africans abroad from today – Tuesday 14 August 2018 – if you subscribe to Showmax.
Metrorail Sabotage
With 39 train carriages set alight and destroyed in just the last four months, Cape Town’s Metrorail is under siege and it will cost R51 million to recover from the damage. Since 2015, 149 carriages have been destroyed and now only eight trains remain to carry thousands of people to work, crippling the Western Cape economy. Investigators believe that there is a sustained campaign to sabotage the city’s rail system. Carte Blanche investigates. (Producer: Liz Fish, Presenter: Derek Watts)
Stellenbosch Under Siege
Amid a sustained crime wave engulfing the university and tourist town of Stellenbosch, which culminated in the brutal murder of a strawberry farmer. One local businessman decided to push back and has rallied fellow residents to reclaim ground lost to criminals. Carte Blanche examines the success of his unconventional methods which have ruffled local authorities’ feathers. (Producer: Liz Fish, Presenter: Macfarlane Moleli)
Eastern Cape Schools for the Disabled
A Carte Blanche investigation reveals the horror of neglect and poor conditions that children with disabilities face in Eastern Cape government boarding schools. A severe staff shortage in just one school has left 244 children with severe mental and physical disabilities without adequate healthcare and supervision – to fend for themselves, and one another. Why has the Eastern Cape government seemingly turned its back on these extremely vulnerable children? (Producer: Tarryn Crossman, Presenter: Claire Mawisa)
Xolani Gwala’s Fight for Life
In September 2017, veteran television and radio broadcaster Xolani Gwala shocked South Africa when he announced that he had been diagnosed with stage four colon cancer. Since then, he has undergone several life-threatening operations and six cycles of chemotherapy. Now he’s in remission and using his journey to help others. Carte Blanche tracks his extraordinary recovery. (Producer: Julian Sun, Presenter: Claire Mawisa)
